Identify a Raccoon

Raccoons are known across most of the North American continent and considered a pest due to their foraging and nesting habits.

Raccoons range in weight from 7 to 30 pounds. Easily identifiable by their unique coloration and other characteristics, including:

  • Black Encircled Eyes (Similar to classic burglar masks)
  • 3 Feet in Length
  • Gray Fur with Hints of Brown
  • Unique Tail Coloring (Rings of white and black down the length of it)
  • Snouts & Omnivorous Teeth Similar in Appearance to Bears & Canines

Raccoons enjoy nesting in forests, marshes, and prairies. They are not picky on their residence, as they will inhabit nests deserted by another wildlife animal. Raccoons are very adaptable animals and are found in almost every climate. These animals are so adaptable they have even learned to survive solely on human garbage.

Raccoon Problems

Entry & Damage

Female and male raccoons will enter homes for different reasons. Males will enter homes in search of food sources, females will enter homes to provide safe shelter for their offspring. Attics, chimneys, and crawlspaces are ideal for raising raccoon babies. Raccoons are strong and have hands that are structured in a way that allows them to grasp objects, giving them the power to open doors, tear through roofing materials, and whatever else it may take to enter a home.

Raccoon damage will be extensive and severe. Entry alone will cause damages to your home that can be expensive to repair. The longer a raccoon is allowed to reside in your home, the more damages will occur. Raccoon droppings will create stains and odors in your attic or chimney, and raccoons are known to be a carrier of diseases that can be transferred to humans and family pets.
